Statement on the Passing of Walter Learning, C.M., O.N.B

The board of directors and staff of the Fredericton Playhouse are saddened by the passing of Walter Learning. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

Mr. Learning’s legacy is immense. As a former General Manager of the Playhouse, founder of Theatre New Brunswick, arts leader and advocate, writer, director, and actor he had a profound impact on countless people, organizations, and communities.

His positive impact on the Canadian theatre sector is undeniable. It is evidenced in the organizations he led, the communities in which he lived and worked, and the countless individuals who came to know him as colleague, mentor, and friend.

Throughout his illustrious life, Mr. Learning worked tirelessly to promote the value of professional theatre for New Brunswickers. He believed it was every New Brunswicker’s birthright to have access to a rich and varied cultural life. His depth of character and unwavering conviction are an inspiration to us all.

I join all New Brunswickers and the Canadian theatre community in mourning the loss of a great friend to and champion of the arts.

Tim Yerxa, Executive Director, Fredericton Playhouse Inc.

I am very sorry to hear that Walter has left us. He was an institution; a creator, a leader, an inspiration, a cultural entrepreneur and a bon vivant. I enjoyed knowing him. Ave et vale Walter.

Walter Learning’s work is done and New Brunswick has reaped the best of it. A full life, well-lived, indeed. We are grateful.
