On Sunday, October 30, the Fredericton Playhouse will host a special celebration of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, featuring a performance by DancewithSL called Roots: A Journey Through India at 7:30 p.m.

Led and choreographed by Shereen Ladha, DancewithSL is a Toronto-based Bollywood fusion company. Roots: A Journey Through India is a narrated production, featuring everything from classical Indian dances to Bollywood styles. This performance will take audiences on a journey inspired by important events and cultural traditions in India’s history – from the love story of the Taj Mahal to modern Mumbai, where Bollywood dancing has gained a world-wide fanbase.

A dancer, choreographer and instructor, Ladha is trained in Bollywood, classical India, hip hop, contemporary and jazz styles of dance. She is the creative mastermind behind hit YouTube channel DancewithSL, featuring dance covers to the latest Bollywood hits and tutorial videos. Ladha has appeared on Canada’s Got Talent, in Hollywood films, and has danced and toured with major Bollywood personalities.

Prior to the performance, this celebration of Diwali will include henna design art led by the Fredericton Association of Indo-Canadians, beginning at 6 p.m.

In addition, the Playhouse is pleased to offer an Experience More! Bollywood Dance Workshop on Saturday, October 29 at 2 p.m. at the Hatheway Family Fitness Studio in the Richard J. Currie Center at UNB. Led by Shereen Ladha, this high energy workshop will teach the basics of Bollywood dancing – no previous experience is required.

Tickets for Roots: A Journey Through India are available through the Fredericton Playhouse box office by calling 458-8344 or online at www.theplayhouse.ca.
