With Cruel Times in Between paints a lyrical portrait of Newfoundland culture

by on April 23, 2015

On Saturday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Fredericton Playhouse, Theatre Newfoundland Labrador will perform With Cruel Times in Between, a beautiful portrait of Newfoundland culture inspired by the writings of the late Al Pittman.

Created in 2011 by Theatre Newfoundland Labrador, With Cruel Times in Between uses selections of Pittman’s poems, prose, songs and plays to demonstrate the culture of island life. This lyrical performance will transport audiences to the Rock from the comfort of their seats.

Featuring a minimalist set of only six chairs, the six actors featured in the play creatively manipulate their surroundings to create a boat, a cradle, a classroom, a creek and more. The scenes unfold to offer a glimpse into everything from childhoods spent spearing flatfish, to shifting resentments as Newfoundlanders are forced to leave their homes as part of the government’s resettlement program.

Theatre Newfoundland Labrador is a professional theatre company dedicated to the creation and development of new plays for and about Newfoundland and Labrador. The company has performed regionally, provincially, nationally and internationally, with the goal of promoting Newfoundland and Labrador stories and artists.

Tickets for With Cruel Times in Between are available through the Fredericton Playhouse box office at 458-8344 or online at
