Contemporary dance artist Jacques Poulin-Denis explores the human condition in Target of God

by on March 6, 2015

On Friday, March 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Fredericton Playhouse, innovative dance artist Jacques Poulin-Denis will transport audiences with his raw solo piece, Target of God.

This contemporary, interdisciplinary performance speaks of delusion and defeat, exploring the human need to understand our reason for being, our path and our purpose. Presented in the Playhouse’s intimate backstage studio space, Target of God dramatizes the moment when our resiliency becomes naiveté before the obviousness of a wrong course.

With a humorous twirl, the piece exposes the personal turmoil of an ingenuous and ill-fated antihero as he confides to the audience, a lamb fed to the wolves.

Jacques Poulin-Denis is a composer, dancer and stage artist. He completed his studies in dance, theatre and a degree in electroacoustic composition from the University of Montreal. Through his various projects, Poulin-Denis attempts to blur the boundaries between these disciplines. His artistic vision is characterized by the quest for what is essentially human, expressing the strength of vulnerability.

The Playhouse is pleased to offer two related Experience More! activities in association with Target of God. The public is invited to the Fredericton Public Library on Thursday, March 12 at 7 p.m. for a free, non-ticketed screening of the film Step Up! This award-winning documentary chronicles Poulin-Denis’ journey toward achieving his dreams as a dancer after losing his foot in a devastating car crash.

Then, immediately following Poulin-Denis’ performance on Friday, March 20, join us for a Facilitated Discussion with Playhouse Executive Director Tim Yerxa in the Playhouse West Gallery. In this informal and relaxed conversation, audience members will explore and share their personal responses to Target of God. Participants will discover new ways of thinking about how we might react to art beyond judging it with a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down.” There is no charge, but space is limited – please register in advance by calling the box office.

Tickets for Target of God are available through the Fredericton Playhouse box office at 458-8344 or online at
