On Thursday, April 24 at 7:30 p.m., the Fredericton Playhouse will host Trick Boxing, a charming, fast-paced physical comedy by husband-and-wife duo Sossy Mechanics. This show will be presented in the Playhouse’s intimate studio space, and will captivate audiences with its clever script and engaging performances.

Written, directed, choreographed and performed by real life married couple Brian Sostek and Megan McClellan, Trick Boxing is set in the 1930s, and follows Danny David, an apple seller who’s caught between a rock and a hard place. When a street tough saves his life, Danny is bamboozled into becoming a boxer to pay back the shady hustler. While training for matches, he meets Bella, a wily dance-hall girl who helps him swing his way to the championship while showing Danny a few moves of her own.

Trick Boxing is full of rapid-fire dialogue, high-energy dance numbers, ridiculous puppetry and, of course, boxing. Sostek and McClellan portray 14 characters in this smash hit, which has garnered awards and rave reviews ever since its 2002 premiere. This is a show that will “send the entire audience out of the theatre with a spring in their step” according to The Guardian.

Sostek and McClellan are two seasoned performers who met while working in a dance company in Minnesota. Their whimsical sensibilities and exacting standards have earned them an award-winning reputation for creating “clear, brilliant storytelling,” dances that “recall Fred and Ginger at their most playful” and “magic out of just about nothing.”

In addition to Sossy Mechanics’ performance of Trick Boxing, the Playhouse is presenting an Experience More! activity on Wednesday, April 23 at 7 p.m. Join Sostek and McClellan for a Swing Class that will introduce participants to the basic vocabulary of social swing dancing. This event will take place in the Hatheway Dance Studio at the Richard J. Currie Centre. Interested participants may register through the Playhouse box office.

Tickets for Sossy Mechanics: Trick Boxing are available through the Playhouse box office 1-866-884-5800, or online at www.theplayhouse.ca.
