Japanese drumming group Fubuki Daiko will wow audiences with an eclectic and energetic performance when they take the Fredericton Playhouse stage on Thursday, February 6 at 7:30 p.m.

For over 18 years, Fubuki Daiko has explored the limitless possibilities of the Japanese drum and flute to develop a performance that’s part martial arts athleticism, part meditation and all rhythm. Humorous and educational narratives between pieces help to establish an immediate connection with audiences and demystify this ancient musical tradition.

The group performs an almost exclusively original repertoire that combines their North American roots with traditional training. The core members of the group each have over 20 years of taiko (Japanese drumming) experience, and received their formative training from the founder of North American taiko, Grandmaster Seiichi Tanaka.

Fubuki Daiko has collaborated with a wide range of groups, including the Northern Plains Ballet, Momentum Dance, the Acromaniacs and the Winnipeg Singers. These partnerships have continued to propel the group’s never ending quest for excellence and innovation in this ancient art form.

The Playhouse is pleased to offer an Experience More! activity in conjunction with this performance. Members of Fubuki Daiko will lead a hands-on Taiko Drumming Workshop on Wednesday, February 5 at 7 p.m. on the Playhouse stage. Participants will learn the basic skills and cultural etiquette of taiko drumming, and will have a chance to experience this unique combination of athleticism and energizing rhythms. Contact the Playhouse box office for more information.

Tickets for Fubuki Daiko are available at a discounted group rate through Spinzo at http://ow.ly/sHemr. Tickets can also be purchased through the Fredericton Playhouse box office 1-866-884-5800, or online at www.theplayhouse.ca
