Toronto Dance Theatre’s latest piece, Rivers, combines the music of a beloved Canadian composer with a bold interpretation from one of Canada’s most respected dance artists. This innovative performance will captivate audiences when it comes to the Fredericton Playhouse on Wednesday, January 29 at 7:30 p.m.

“Rivers” is the beloved masterpiece of the late composer Ann Southam. In collaboration with Toronto Dance Theatre’s 10 dancers, Artistic Director Christopher House has created a fluid and unpredictable counterpoint to the sublime music, reflecting the rushing cascades, luxuriant eddies and quiet islands of calm in the score.

Adding to the creative nature of the piece, “Rivers” will be performed live by one of Canada’s foremost pianists, Christina Petrowska Quilico, widely recognized as an innovative and adventurous artist who brilliantly interprets contemporary classical music.

This isn’t the first time House has been inspired by Southam’s music; he began collaborating with the composer in the early 1980s. House’s choreography for her piano composition “Glass Houses #5” in 1983 became a signature work for Toronto Dance Theatre, and was performed more than 100 times around the world.

Now, 30 years later, House says he’s thrilled to reconnect with one of Southam’s most beloved compositions.

“Considered by many to be Ann’s masterpiece, ‘Rivers’ is a cycle of minimalist piano works that range from boisterous to serene to triumphantly ecstatic,” House says. “Making a dance to this music has been an exhilarating experience – I am grateful to all my collaborators for their inspiring contributions to the creative process and for their trust, generosity and guidance.”

The Playhouse is pleased to offer two Experience More! activities in conjunction with Rivers. On Monday, January 27, the Playhouse will host a Masterclass in Contemporary Dance with Toronto Dance Theatre. Participants can register through the Playhouse box office, and registration is open to the public.

Additionally, Christopher House will participate in a pre-show talk on Wednesday, January 29 at 6:30 p.m. This free event will be hosted by Fredericton Playhouse Executive Director Tim Yerxa, and is open to all ticket holders.

Tickets for Rivers are available at a discounted group rate through Spinzo at http://ow.ly/ssz9Y. Tickets can also be purchased through the Fredericton Playhouse box office 1-866-884-5800, or online at www.theplayhouse.ca.
