1314 Spotlight Season

The Fredericton Playhouse proudly announced its 2013-2014 Spotlight Series season last night to an eager audience of returning Spotlight members, sponsors and partners. The series features professional performances in music, theatre, and dance in a variety of genres. Consisting of 31 world-class artists, this season promises a stellar line-up of entertainment that will offer everything from comedy, to stunning dance performances, to several family friendly shows, as well as returning audience favourites, and Broadway hits.

Leading the lineup of special presentations is legendary singer/songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie, who came to prominence during the mid 60s as part of New York’s Greenwich Village folk scene alongside contemporaries Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell. Also of note is a one-of-a-kind musical and theatrical experience made up of the finest fiddle and violin virtuosos ever assembled: Bowfire features electrifying music, incredible step and tap dancing, and beautiful voices in a fast-paced show with first class production values.

The Spotlight Series dance offerings are ready to impress with three radiant and expressive works by Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal, the profoundly emotional choreography and performance of Canadian legend Peggy Baker, a new work by Toronto Dance Theatre set to a piano cycle by Canadian composer Ann Southam, and a hot and passionate flamenco fused with opera, blues and Cuban rhythms for a never-before-seen production of its kind by Halifax’s Maria Osende Flamenco.

Also hitting the Playhouse stage for their Farewell Tour are cherished Canadian icons The Irish Rovers. Having brought Ireland into the living rooms of North America for generations, this is a concert experience not to be missed. Celebrated Cape Breton siblings The Barra MacNeils will also be gracing the Playhouse stage with a special Christmas performance as they celebrate 26 years in the music business.

To tickle the funny bone, the Spotlight Series is bringing back another hilarious offering from the hit Late Nite Catechism franchise, Charles Ross of One Man Star Wars fame returns with One Man Lord of The Rings, and Gemini-nominated comedian Nikki Payne will bring down the house with her no-holds-barred style of comedy.

Many fan favourites also remain in the program, such as the popular Kidstage series for young audiences, and another instalment of Classic Albums Live featuring one of the ‘70s must-have albums: Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours.

Audiences will also be amazed by some unique offerings such as Intergalactic Nemesis, a live-action graphic novel featuring three actors, one Foley artist, one keyboardist and more than 1250 hand-drawn, full-colour, blow-your-mind comic book images projected onto a two-story-high screen. Another unique addition to the season is Rock Legends, a rock and roll revue created by audience favourite Billy McGuigan, where patrons are given the opportunity to vote through the power of their applause for the songs and music they want to hear.

Of particular note are the ever-popular Broadway presentations. Not only will patrons have the chance to see Godspell, one of the most enduring shows of all time, but The Fredericton Playhouse is thrilled to have secured a national tour stop from the musical that over 54 million people around the world have fallen in love with: Mamma Mia!

“We have an incredible variety of performances this year,” said Executive Director Tim Yerxa. “We’re excited to share some very unique artists that will amaze our audiences, and to bring back a few favourites. We have two large-scale musicals, more of our popular intimate performances, and everything from comedy to spoken word, to East Coast favourites; and from classical music to a live-action graphic novel. There is something for everyone and we’re extremely proud of the season we’ve programmed this year.”

The award-winning venue simultaneously launched the fifth year of its Spotlight Membership program, which is designed to give patrons easier access to the shows they want to see at a discounted price. Member benefits include early access to the best seats in the house, special pricing on all Spotlight Series and all Spotlight Partner performances (Theatre New Brunswick, New Brunswick Country Showcase and Symphony NB.)

“We’re thrilled that our Spotlight membership program has received such a high level of participation since its inception,” said Yerxa. “With the purchase of one membership, patrons can buy up to six discounted tickets per performance, which puts money back in their pockets after only a couple of shows.”

Spotlight Memberships are on sale now and only members can purchase tickets to Spotlight Series performances until August 20, when regular priced tickets go on sale. “Spotlight Members have the huge advantage of getting their tickets early and picking the best seats,” said Yerxa.

Thirty-one (31) upcoming performances were announced in all. Each performance is detailed in the Spotlight Series season brochure, available at the Playhouse box office or online at
