Experience More! An open rehearsal with Lesandra Dodson

by on January 21, 2013

On Tuesday, January 22, take a peek into the evocative and creative new works of Lesandra Dodson when The Fredericton Playhouse Experience More! program presents an open rehearsal to the public between 3 and 5pm for a rare and interesting behind-the-scenes look into professional dance.

This rehearsal wraps up preparation for the premiere of Dodson’s new work The Trilogy Project, which will be presented at The Fredericton Playhouse on Wednesday, January 23 at 7:30pm.

The Trilogy Project consists of three exciting new works, bringing together exceptional dance artists from all over the country. Her blameless mystery, In two days a man can change and A leash for two hounds, make up a series of unconventional duets that blend highly charged physicality with nuanced characterization. Dodson’s intelligently crafted choreography is delicate while remaining fearless in its droll and delicious take on the human foibles.

Her blameless mystery, a collaboration with NB filmmaker Chris Giles and composers Luis Cardoso and Josh Latour, is an interactive solo inspired by the prolific writer Emily Dickinson. It’s a surreal take on a woman’s creative journey. Using found text from ancient medical journals, original film clips and simple animation, this piece is an absurd and profound view of life and death and the transformative spirit within.

In two days a man can change, received glowing reviews in The Globe and Mail. Highly characterized and dramatic, the duet deals with struggles between nature and nurture. Combining video clips of the Monument Valley with Elmore Leonard cowboy-western style text, it’s a fusion of words and movement presented in a film noir style, with original music by Winnipeg’s Christine Fellows.

A leash for two hounds was created as an affiliation with Halifax’s Mocean Dance. A duet with dancers Susanne Chui and Darryl Tracy, the piece was completed in August 2012, during a creative residency at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre with composer-in-residence Christine Fellows and choreographer-in-residence Lesandra Dodson. Exploring male-female coupling in an untraditional manner, it touches on notions of “survival of the fittest” and plays with action-reaction patterns.

The unpredictability, mystery and subtle interplay of Dodson’s Trilogy Project make this work exciting and evocative, and one not to be missed for fans of contemporary dance, film or performance art. The open rehearsal is free of charge and takes place at The Fredericton Playhouse.
