Swing into spring with the Playhouse’s annual Onstage Gala!

by on March 29, 2012

It’s time for a renaissance, and the Fredericton Playhouse will be doing just that when it hosts its annual Bell Aliant Onstage Gala on Saturday, April 28. A charity benefit for The Playhouse’s community work, the event will take a “swing” in another direction this year, trading in its previous sit-down dinner format for a lively and entertaining themed night of music and dance from an era that’s been enjoying resurgence of late thanks to television shows like Dancing With The Stars.

Prepare for opulence as the Playhouse stage and adjacent backstage areas are beautifully transformed into a combination of a 1920s speakeasy and a 1930s dance hall. And to celebrate the decades that saw the birth of swing dance in the face of prohibition, guests will be invited to dance the night away on the Playhouse stage to the big band sounds of Halifax’s celebrated Jubilee Swing Orchestra. By their sheer magnitude and energy, the traditional 17-piece swing band – dedicated to the authentic sound of the era – are sure to transport party-goers back to a time when the Lindy Hop was king.

Playhouse Board President Kim Hill looks forward to the refreshed format for this year’s event and notes that the committee members have been working tirelessly to pull of what is sure to be an incredible celebration of the era. Says Hill, “It is an event vital to the success of programs such as the Arts are for Everyone initiative, which allows us to provide meaningful, cultural, and artistic experiences to those in our community who might need a helping hand in overcoming barriers to their participation in our programming.”

In addition to the music and dancing, the evening will include a welcome cocktail, fabulous hors d’hœuvres, and a chance to win a fully stocked wine cellar! Dance lessons are even provided for those who want to learn some new swing moves to show off on the dance floor.

Come dressed in the fashion of the period, or in your favourite modern style, and slide up to the speakeasy bar for a cocktail or glass of champagne. Whether you’re a non-dancer or a Lindy Hopper well versed in “swingology” come and get a taste of what it must have been like to party on the sly and dance to the music that defined an era!
