Prepare to be “schooled” by Late Nite Catechism

by on January 20, 2011

On Friday, January 28 at 8pm The Fredericton Playhouse is proud to present, Late Nite Catechism, the show that has been making waves around the world with its unabashed yet fond look at old-style Roman Catholic education. Playwrights Vicki Quade and Maripat Donovan have crafted a hugely popular, witty, and interactive comedy show in which the audience is the class.

Actress Denise Fennell stars as tart-tongued Sister, ruling her classroom with an iron fist. She teaches her students, who happen to be the audience, everything she knows about sins and saints, while doling out rewards and reprimands with lightning speed. She may hand out glow-in-the-dark rosaries at one moment, and confiscate lipsticks and candy the next. As part of her class, she’ll take you back to the days of the Latin Mass, meatless Fridays, and remind you about the good old ruler across the knuckles.

Naughty students may well find themselves on stage, sitting in a corner, and reflecting on their actions. However, even the most reluctant “students” will be clamouring to get into this Sister’s class. Now in its 14th year, Late Nite Catechism has brought its nostalgic kick to every state in the U.S. as well as to Canada, the U.K., and Australia. Each performance is unique, and will appeal to people of all ages and faiths.

Bridging the formerly-thought enormous gap between stand-up comedy and Catholic rhetoric, Late Nite Catechism enchants. According to Newsday, “Sister offers a funny, sometimes sharply satiric, but always affectionate look at an old-fashioned religious.” Those who survived the torrents of a catechismic past will no doubt find themselves wishing their former days might have been as full of laughs and hilarity as Late Nite Catechism.

The Los Angeles Times noted that “Sister’s lovingly rendered creation is inspired entertainment.

“Late Nite Catechism,” says The Explorer, “is the real thing – it is funny, witty, well-written and one of the most enjoyable evenings of theatre that you could hope to find.”

Tickets for Late Nite Catechism are available at the Fredericton Playhouse box office 1-866-884-5800, or online at
