2010 – 2011 Spotlight Series Line-Up Announced

by on June 21, 2010

The Fredericton Playhouse divulged its 2010-11 Spotlight Series on stage today during its annual launch.  After introducing the new Spotlight Series last year – formerly the “@theplayhouse season” – the Playhouse has seen tremendous response to its new flagship performing arts series. The series features professional performances in music, theatre, and dance in a variety of genres. It consists of 34 world-class performances in 10 themed series, including a new comedy series, innovative and provocative dance performances and several family-friendly shows.

Many exciting performances appear in this season’s line up, including many well-known established artists. Topping that list is highly acclaimed Canadian dramatic tenor Ben Heppner, fresh from his spectacular performance at the 2010 Olympic Closing Ceremonies. Also worth noting is a return by folk-icon Bruce Cockburn, as well as a stimulating and distinctive dance piece by Montreal’s internationally acclaimed Compagnie Marie Chouinard. Hitting the Playhouse stage as well is YouTube phenom Dave Carroll with his Halifax-based band Sons of Maxwell. Dave’s “United Breaks Guitars” video has garnered him international attention this year with more than 8.5 million views. New to the program this year is a special Onstage series, which sees a smaller audience seated on stage with the artist and treated to a highly intimate and personal concert experience. Many fan favourites remain in the program, like the very successful Classic Albums Live series, as well as the popular Kidstage series for young audiences.

“We’re very excited to be presenting such a diverse line up this year,” said Executive Director Tim Yerxa. “We’ll be hosting artists from all over the world as well as from the United States and Canada – including some very talented artists from right here in our own region. There’s truly something for everyone. If you can’t find something you’ll love in the Spotlight Series, then you likely can’t find it anywhere.”

The award-winning venue simultaneously launched the second year of its Spotlight Membership program, which is designed to give patrons easier access to the shows they want to see at a discounted price. Member benefits include early access to the best seats in the house, special pricing on all Spotlight Series and all Spotlight Partner performances (Theatre New Brunswick, Symphony New Brunswick, New Brunswick Country Showcase and Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada), as well as on select other performances including the national touring production of Monty Python’s Spamalot. Membership advantages also include $10 access to all enrichment activities within the Experience More! program.

“We’re thrilled that our new Spotlight membership program received such a high level of participation this past year,” said Yerxa. “With the purchase of one membership, patrons can buy up to six discounted tickets per performance, which puts money back in their pockets after only a couple of shows. Gone are the days of subscriptions and minimum purchase restrictions – members receive the discount on whichever performances they wish to attend. Best of all, their membership benefits stay with them all season long.”

Spotlight Memberships are on sale now and only members can purchase tickets to Spotlight Series performances until August 23, when regular priced tickets go on sale.

“Spotlight Members have the huge advantage of getting their tickets early and picking the best seats,” said Yerxa.

34 upcoming performances were announced in all. Each performance is detailed in the Spotlight Series Season Guide, available at the Playhouse Box Office or at www.theplayhouse.ca.
