Freddy hosts Jacko tribute

Two-hour tribute to Jacko set for Freddy

When 19 year-old Stefan Folkins heard the news on June 25, 2009, he couldn’t believe his ears.

“When I heard of Michael Jackson’s passing, I was shocked and devastated,” Folkins says. “I was performing in a play at Odell [Park] and the whole cast knew but they didn’t tell me, because they knew I wouldn’t be able to go ahead if I knew.”

The business and theatre student at the University of New Brunswick has been a lifelong fan of Jackson’s; the pop icon’s death hit him hard. But rather than dwell on the tragedy, Folkins focused his attention on the future, organizing the best tribute show this side of Neverland Ranch.Gallery Image

Slated for June 25 and 26, the two-hour performance at Fredericton’s Playhouse features 22 classic Jackson jingles. Directed, produced and choreographed by Folkins himself, the show features local talent, which Folkins says is a reflection on Fredericton’s diverse cultural scene.

“There’s so much talent that everyone has given to the show. As much as it is about honouring Michael Jackson, it’s also showcasing Fredericton’s wonderful talent,” he says.

“Shows like this can happen right in our hometown, not just in Las Vegas.”

The audience will be taken through a time warp as dancers and singers tell the tale of Jackson’s colourful life from his 1, 2, 3 days in the Jackson 5 to rocking your world in Invincible – just don’t expect any tabloid-style revelations in the show.

Cast and crew members range from tweens to seniors, which Folkins says represents the universal appreciation for Jackson’s work. “Michael Jackson appealed to all ages, all races and religions. He was truly the only artist who had a global appeal.”
